International Women's Day celebration to include music by Ruth Mathiang, an exciting and fun game of Trivia with a feminist twist, prizes and food.
Music, fun and food are on the bill at this year’s celebration of International Women’s Day, Saturday, March 6th at the Guild in Charlottetown.
Ruth Mathiang, now living in Toronto, will make a return visit to Charlottetown for the event. Ruth is originally from Sudan, but came to P.E.I. in 2001 to attend university here. She moved to Toronto a few years ago to pursue a graduate degree. Today Ruth is one of the rising stars of African music in Toronto. She has two CDs to her credit. The most recent, “Butterfly”, is a mixture of her favourite styles of music, including Hip Hop, Reggae, Afrobeat, and Gospel.
For trivia buffs, the evening will feature an entertaining and distinctly feminist game - “Eve’s Quest” - that will challenge participants knowledge of women’s history, arts, myths and wisdom. So here’s a question: Do you know how often women appear in trivia games, really? The answer: Only 4% of the content for an average trivia game deals with women.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and there will be a cash bar. For more information, contact Cooper Institute, 894-4573 or cooperinstitute@eastlink.ca. This event is organized by the International Women’s Day Committee, which includes Cooper Institute, Women’s Network P.E.I., the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, CUSO-VSO, P.E.I. Federation of Labour, the InterMinisterial Women's Secretariat and the P.E.I. Rape and Sexual Assault Centre and the support of the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation.
