In 2008, Cooper Institute, in collaboration with the National Farmers Union, carried out a one-year project about Domestic Fair Trade. An important part of the project was research into DFT projects and organizations in Canada and the U.S. The research was presented by Susan Fitzpatrick at the 2008 annual convention of the National Farmers' Union in Saskatoon and at two community workshops, one in Kinkora and one in Charlottetown in December, 2008.

The next step in the project will be a series of public meetings with two representatives from the Windward Islands, in the fall of 2009.

Cooper Institute, with the National Farmers Union, is currently seeking funding for a second project which would see the development of a made-in-P.E.I. plan for a marketing system based Domestic Fair Trade principles.
